Little faith.

I’m not an opera fan–not by any stretch of the imagination. I don’t speak or understand Italian (I’m guessing this is sung in Italian. It’s Greek to me.)

And I don’t watch those tv talent shows where a handful of “judges” get to tear the heart out of a contestant.

A friend sent me this link, so I clicked on it.

I didn’t understand a word, but I sat here at my computer and cried. The heart the man displayed while performing made the judges look like theirs were from a bargain basement.

Then I had to wonder, what kind of passion did he have to overcome all the obstacles to develop his talent to that point? How much time? Ridicule? Disbelief?

Then, of course, I wonder if it’s really him singing or if he’s lip-sinking the whole thing.

Oh, Me, of little faith.

  1. I caught this on TV by accident–about 2 minutes–and being an opera buff myself, I’m pretty sure he wasn’t lip-synching. The shape of his mouth, constriction of his neck muscles, and movement of his chest looked pretty authenic to me. I was hugely impressed.

And you should try opera sometime. Tulsa has great productions. The stage presentations are totally different than watching on TV. The music, the costumes, and the drama are unbelievable. And you DO know what’s going on–there are large, lighted sub-titles over the stage.

  2. I had no idea you were an opera buff, Jackie! Wow, the things I don’t know about my friends.

I love ballet, so I’ll bet I’d like opera, too. I’ve just never tried it.

    Thanks!

Ps: When the guy sang, did it make you cry?
